Sports Roundup: Boys Soccer Wins Again, Volleyball Snaps Losing Streak
David Creed •
This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the boys and girls soccer teams following victories, the golf team, who find themselves just two wins away from the state tournament qualifier, the volleyball team after snapping their losing skid, and the cross country team.
Five Different Scorers Lead Boys Soccer To Second Straight Win
The boys soccer team earned a 5-0 victory at home today against the Sturgis West Navigators – improving their record to 4-1-4 this season.
The Whaler’s goal scoring was widespread with five different players finding the back of the net. Freshman Aldo Lemus, freshman Stoyan Popov, senior captain Jake Johnson, senior Ray Ruiz, and senior Derlys Fernandez all scored goals.
Nantucket currently finds itself at #21 in the latest Div. 4 state tournament rankings that were revealed Tuesday morning. Their next match is against last year’s Div. 4 state championship runner up – the Monomoy Sharks – on Thursday, October 3 at 4:15 p.m. Monomoy is currently ranked #18 in the Div. 4 bracket.

Brannigan’s Hat Trick Leads Girls Soccer Past Sturgis West
The Nantucket girls soccer team earned a 4-1 victory Tuesday afternoon against the Sturgis West Navigators. Senior captain Adney Brannigan scored three goals in the match while junior captain Chelsea Gross scored one goal.
The girls, much like the boys team, are enjoying a successful start to their season and currently has a 5-2-2 record. In the latest Div. 4 state tournament power rankings, the Whalers are currently #18.
Nantucket will attempt to earn their sixth win of the season when they host the Monomoy Sharks – ranked #15 in the Div. 4 rankings – on Thursday, October 3 at 4 p.m.

The Whalers are now 6-6 and just two wins away from clinching a spot in the state tournament qualifier with four regular season matches remaining. They will travel to the mainland to face Cape Cod Academy on Wednesday, October 2 at 4 p.m. and then are right back at it with a road match against Sturgis East on Thursday, October 3 at 4 p.m.
Volleyball Snaps Losing Streak, Beats CCA
The Whaler volleyball team snapped their eight-match losing skid with a 3-1 victory over Cape Cod Academy Monday afternoon. The Whalers hadn’t won since their 3-1 victory in their season opener against the St. John Paul II Lions.
Senior Rihanna Cranston led the team with eight kills with senior Leah Crowley right behind her with six. Senior captain Vicky Todorova led the team with 34 digs while Cranston had 22. Junior Mariana Silva led the Whalers with eight aces while Cranston had six and Todorova had four. Senior Lyric Pearl led Nantucket with 13 assists.
The Whalers are now 2-8 this season and thanks to an extremely difficult schedule to begin their season, are currently in solid position within the latest Div. 4 state tournament power rankings – slotting in at #18 and within striking distance to land a Round of 32 home match.
Nantucket will be on the road facing the Falmouth Clippers on Thursday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m. The Clippers beat Nantucket 3-1 on the island last month on September 16.
Cross Country Loses First Meet Of The Season
The Nantucket cross country team has had a strong start to their season but lost their first meet on Tuesday against the Falmouth Clippers 19-64. Below are the times recorded by each Whaler runner.
Rory Murray – 18:09
Numa Solano – 21:44 (PR)
Jack Harris – 22:53
Boris Boychev – 25:36
Malachi Seip – 25:50
Iain MacIver – 39:48
“Overall, a good day out against a really phenomenal program,” head coach Chris Miemiec said. “Falmouth will probably win the league championship and maybe even a state division title this year. We only ran six today as the majority of our team is sick and recovering. Overall, a great learning experience against a fast team.”

The golf team will be on the road facing Cape Cod Academy at 4 p.m.
