Sports Roundup: Field Hockey Ties Barnstable

This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the field hockey team following an entertaining home matchup against Barnstable, as well as updates on the volleyball team following their home opener, the boys soccer team following a road matchup against the defending state champions, and the golf team following a road victory.
Field Hockey Ties Barnstable In Final Second Thriller
The Whaler field hockey team found themselves trailing 3-1 in the final quarter of their Monday afternoon matchup against the Barnstable Red Hawks on the island, but rallied to tie the game and avoid their second loss of the season.
Aliana Davis, Maddie Boulter and Veena Stone were the three goal scorers for Nantucket and it was also the first varsity goal for each player. The Whalers were able to score off a corner with seven minutes to play in the game to cut Barnstable's lead to 3-2 and then scored the equalizer off another corner play with five seconds left in the match.
The Whalers are 0-1-2 to begin their season. They are incorporating several new players into their starting lineup, and each have had four different goal scorers responsible for their four goals this season.
The Whalers will try to win their first game of the season on Wednesday, September 16th at home against the Nauset Warriors at 3:45 p.m. Below are some more photos from Monday's matchup with Barnstable taken by Chris Tran.
Volleyball Drops Home Opener To St. John Paul II
The Whaler volleyball team lost to the St. John Paul II Lions Monday afternoon three sets to one and are now 1-1 this season. The sets were as followed.
Set One: 25-20 SJP
Set Two: 25-21 SJP
Set Three: 26-24 Nantucket
Set Four: 25-18 SJP
Statistically, senior captain Viki Bozhkova led the Whalers with six aces and added five kills and three assists. Senior Quinn Canty led Nantucket with seven kills. Cariela Acosta led the Whalers with 12 assists.
The Whalers will try to improve to 2-1 this season when they travel to play the Sandwich Blue Knights on Wednesday, September 16th at 3:30 p.m. Below are some photos from Monday's matchup with SJP taken by Chris Tran.
In other Whaler sports news, the boys soccer team traveled to play the defending state champion Norwell Clippers and lost a close matchup 2-1.
The Whalers took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal scored by Calvin Guevara on a direct free kick taken 25 yards from goal.
"Raakin Brannigan earned the foul which resulted in the goal because of his aggressive forward thinking play," Brannigan II said. "Norwell scored two unanswered goals in a five minute span to tie and take the lead, both goals were in the second half. Nantucket had a few good chances by Aldo Lemus and Stoyan Popov but they didn’t come to fruition. Edvin Valentukevicius anchored the defense with solid play. Parker Furtado played 80 minutes in net and made six saves."
Nantucket is now 2-1 this season and will try to earn their third win of the season on Wednesday, September 16th at home against the Nauset Warriors at 4:00 p.m.
GOLF BEATS RISING TIDE
The Whaler golf team traveled to Plymouth to play the Rising Tide Herons, and won 209-236. Below are the scores for Nantucket's top six golfers (Par-3 Course).

The Whalers are now 3-2 this season and will be back in action on Thursday, September 17th on the road against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins at 3:30 p.m.
