Field Hockey’s Offense Explodes, Shuts Out Sturgis East
The Whaler field hockey team celebrated their seniors Thursday afternoon following their most convincing win of the season – a 6-0 victory on the island against the Sturgis East Storm.
Senior Evie Phelps and junior Rowan Paul led the way for the Whalers scoring two goals and notching one assist each. Senior Ava Watson scored her first goal of her varsity career in the second quarter to extend Nantucket’s lead to 4-0.
The Whalers are now 3-6-2 and riding a two-game win streak after beating Sturgis East on Wednesday as well, but on the road 4-1.
Below are some photos taken during their senior recognition ceremony after the game and during their victory by Chris Tran and David Creed.
Football Team Loses On Senior Day, Drops To 1-4
The Whaler football team lost to the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins 29-10 Thursday night under the lights and for the second straight game, were unable to build on some early offensive momentum generated in the first quarter.
Nantucket’s only touchdown came in the first quarter on a 36-yard touchdown pass from senior Eli MacIver to senior wide receiver Kyden Whitfield to give the Whalers an early 7-0 lead with 8:08 to go in the first quarter.
But from there, the Whalers were unable to get much going offensively or finish their drives. The Dolphins scored 21 unanswered points to go into halftime leading 21-7. The Whalers last score was a field goal from 28 yards out to cut it to 21-10 with 9:53 to go in the game.
The Whalers are now 1-4 and will be back in action on Friday, October 23rd when they travel to play the Sandwich Blue Knights at 4 p.m. Below are some photos from the game and senior recognition ceremony taken by Chris Tran and David Creed.

Boys Soccer Suffers Ugly Loss To Monomoy
The boys soccer team, after beginning the year 8-1, has suddenly hit some turbulence midway through the season and lost to the Monomoy Sharks on the island 3-0 on Wednesday. The defeat brought Nantucket’s record to 8-3-1.
“We should have shown way better," Whaler head coach Rich Brannigan II said. “There needs to be a response, and I've said that after the last two games. They're tired, but that's not an excuse to not keep working. Everyone's fatigued. We're all playing a game every other day for eight games now. Another one on Friday. You know what I mean? If it pulls off with the weather. That's all hard for them. It's hard for the coaches. But we got to find a way to work through it in an 80-minute game.”
The Whalers will try to get back on track on Friday, October 16th at home against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins at 4 p.m. Below are some photos from their game on Wednesday taken by Chris Tran.
In other Whaler sports news, the girls soccer team earned an impressive 3-0 victory on the road against the Monomoy Sharks on Wednesday. Nantucket head coach Doug LeBrecht praised his team ability to travel on the road with a banged up squad and sail back with a victory.
“With some adjustments we were able to put together a good team,” LeBrecht said. “Emma (Woodbury) scored first off a Ruby Steadman corner kick. Harper LeBrecht scored from a Ruby Steadman assist. In the second half, Harper LeBrecht scored on her own steal from off a center back. Goalie Madden Myers had a shut out with seven saves. Good bounce back game.”
