Sports Roundup: Girls Hoops Loses Home Opener, Girls Swim Beats Martha's Vineyard

This Whaler sports roundup includes an update and photos from the girls basketball team’s home opener on Tuesday, as well as an update on the boys and girls swim teams following a road meet against the Vineyard.

Girls Hoops Comes Up Short In Home Opener

The girls basketball team played a hard and competitive game Tuesday afternoon at Nantucket High School in their home opener, but lost to Falmouth Academy 37-28.

Nantucket only trailed 16-15 at halftime, but Falmouth Academy controlled the third quarter and outscored the Whalers 13-5 to pull away and create a gap Nantucket couldn’t close.

Sophomore guard Grace Schroeder led the Whalers with nine points. Freshman Chloe Washington had seven points.

Nantucket is now 0-2 this season and is still searching for their first victory but will have two more attempts to do so before Christmas. They will host the Sturgis West Navigators on Friday, December 19th at 5 p.m. and then host the Monomoy Sharks on Tuesday, December 23rd at 5 p.m.

Girls Swim Wins, Boys Swim Loses To Martha’s Vineyard

The boys and girls swim teams traveled to Martha’s Vineyard on Tuesday to compete with their island rival, and the girls team dominated to win their meet 132-38 while the boys lost their meet 100-61.

Below are some of the notable times for Nantucket.

GIRLS:

Sara Dussault, Zoli Day, Evie Phelps, and Myah Johnson placed first in the 200 yard medley relay and earned a state qualifying time of 2:02.02.

Myah Johnson placed first in the 50 yard freestyle with a state qualifying time of 25.76. She also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a state qualifying time of 57.52.

Zoli Day, Sara Dussault, Evie Phelps, and Myah Johnson placed first in the 200 yard freestyle relay and earned a sectional qualifying time of 1:52.02.

Leila Noddin, Sasha Noddin, Harper LeBrecht, and Finley Herlihy placed second in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:14.56.

Sammi Nielsen placed first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:31.58.

Zoli Day placed first in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:30.91, Leila Noddin placed second with a time of 2:38.48, and Charlotte Brooksplaced third with a time of 2:56.34.

Finley Herlihy placed second in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 29.36.

Evie Phelps placed first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.96,Harper LeBrecht placed second with a time of 1:13.02, and Inna Nikolovaplaced third with a time of 1:21.59.

Sara Dussault placed second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:04.22.

Leila Noddin placed first in the grueling 500 yard freestyle with a time of 6:02.56 and Sammi Nielsen placed second with a time of 6:49.59. Presy Penkova also swam it and placed fifth with a time of 8:37.15 – picking up two additional points for the Whalers.

Sasha Noddin, Gabby Nikolova, Inna Nikolova, and Harper LeBrecht placed second in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:04.06.


BOYS:

Markus Vitanov placed first in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:39.29.

Andrick Mooney placed first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.88.

Robert Graves placed first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 6:21.02.

Maksin Zotau placed second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:32.53) with a close loss to Dylan Hitchen (2:30.80).

Andrick Mooney placed second in the 100 yard freestyle (57.54) with a close loss to Claus Smith (56.17). Pavlin Aleksiev placed fourth with a time of 59.22.

Maksin Zotau, Finnley Seip, Chase Pignato, and James Donahue placed second in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:16.59.

The next meet is currently scheduled for December 18th at home against the Barnstable Red Hawks at 5 p.m.


SCHEDULE AHEAD:

Wednesday, December 17th:

The girls hockey team will be on the road playing Barnstable at 4 p.m.

The boys basketball team will be at home playing Falmouth at 5 p.m.

The boys hockey team will be at home playing Bourne High School at 5:15 p.m.


Thursday, December 18th:


The boys swim team will be at home for a meet against Barnstable at 5 p.m.
