Sports Roundup: Girls Hoops Win, Rory Murray Breaks School Record For Fastest Mile

This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the girls basketball team after a road victory, the indoor boys & girls track teams including a new school record, and the boys & girls swim teams.
Girls Hoops Beat Sturgis East
For the first time since December 17th, the Nantucket girls basketball team played a game – a road matchup against the Sturgis East Storm on Tuesday.
Head coach Rafael Osona said his team has some rust to shake off moving forward, but they were able to beat the Storm 56-25. The win improved their record to 1-2 this season.
Nantucket was led in scoring by senior guard Mani Taveras, who finished with 15 points. Senior guard/forward Maddie Lombardi had 12 points. Senior guard Adney Brannigan finished with 10 points.
The Whalers will try to bump their record up to .500 when they host the Mashpee Falcons on Friday, January 17th at 5 p.m.
Rory Murray Breaks School Record For 1 Mile Run
The boys & girls indoor track teams performed well in an off-island meet against the Nauset Warriors on Tuesday, and senior captain Rory Murray made history by setting a school record for fastest one mile run.
Head coach Chris Miemiec provided the Current with notable scores, which we have listed below. Each score/time was a personal best for each athlete.

Boys & Girls Swim Make Up Meet Against Sandwich
The boys & girls swim teams made up a previously cancelled meet against Sandwich on the road Tuesday. Head coach Dylan Jones said both teams scored some solid times, however Nantucket needed to scramble to catch the ferry home and did not have the results available prior to our Wednesday newsletter.
We will provide an update on how the swimmers performed in our Friday newsletter and sports roundup.

The boys hockey team will be on the road facing the St. John Paul II Lions at 4 p.m.
Thursday, January 16th:
The boys basketball team will host the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins at 5 p.m.
