Sports Roundup: Girls Tennis Sweeps Dennis-Yarmouth
David Creed •
This sports roundup includes updates on the girls tennis team after their sweep of Dennis-Yarmouth, the girls lacrosse team after yet another victory, the boys lacrosse team following another road win, and the boys tennis team.
Girls Tennis Wins Third Straight Match
The girls tennis team completed a clean sweep over the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins Monday afternoon. They won the match 5-0 and every singles player and doubles pairing won their respective matches in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
“They are all stepping up and they all have worked so hard all season,” Nantucket head coach Luke Thornewill said. “They are all sort of peaking now and they are going to continue to peak actually. They are all playing as good as we have seen them.”
Thornewill spoke very highly of senior Joan Harris in particular. Harris has been the Whaler’s top singles player this season and he has enjoyed seeing her take strides in her game.
“She is getting much more friendly with the net,” Thornewill said. “We are watching her be much more aggressive than she has ever been before. She is hitting the ball harder than before. These past two matches we have seen this big step up of ball speed. She is starting to bring a different game, a more aggressive game to the plate. It is pretty cool.”
Nantucket is now 6-2 this season and are currently the #15 seed in the latest Div. 4 state tournament power rankings, which came out late Tuesday morning. Their next game is Wednesday, May 8 on the road against Sturgis East at 4 p.m.
Girls Lax Stays Hot Offensively, Beats Barnstable
Another game, another win for the Nantucket girls lacrosse team. They beat Barnstable 21-8 and improved their record to 12-0 this season.
Senior Bailey Lower finished with six goals and seven assists while fellow senior Emerson Pekarcik tallied six goals and added four helpers.
The Whalers received scoring from several other players as well. Junior Mayson Lower scored three goals, senior Cydney Mosscrop scored two goals and notched three assists, sophomore Dylan Damian scored two goals, sophomore Carley Ray and junior Suz Peraner scored one goal each, and senior Evy Stahl tallied one assist.
Nantucket remains the #2 seed in the latest Div. 4 state tournament power rankings but are neck and neck with Weston for the top spot and could catch them if they continue to stack up wins.
The Whalers will try to keep their success going and pick up their 13th straight victory on Thursday, May 9 at 3:45 p.m. when they travel to Nauset for a matchup with the Warriors, who they beat 17-6 earlier this season.
Boys Lacrosse Earns Seventh Straight Victory
The boys lacrosse team remains the top seed in the Div. 4 state tournament power rankings and earned their seventh consecutive win Tuesday evening on the road against Barnstable – beating the Red Hawks 11-4.
What has made the Whalers so dangerous this season has been the plethora of ways they can beat their opponent. Nantucket head coach Sam Aloisi touched on it following the Whaler’s 7-6 win over King Philip on Sunday, and it continued on Tuesday with six different Nantucket players scoring at least one goal.
Seniors Cole Chambers and Paddy Carroll each scored three goals and added one assist. Sophomore Nolen Mosscrop scored two goals and had two assists. Senior Jack Halik had one goal and three assists. Senior Colby O’Keefe had one goal and one assist. Senior Ryan Davis notched one goal.
The Whalers also got six saves from sophomore goalie Jeremy Jenkinson – who remains one of the x-factors for Nantucket if they want to make a deep state tournament run in June.
The Whalers improved to 9-1 this season and they will try to get their win total into double digits when they host Nauset on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m. Nantucket beat Nauset on the road April 23 7-5.
Boys Tennis Drops Road Matchup To Plymouth South
When the Whalers hosted the Plymouth South Panthers on April 6, they were able to walk away with a thrilling 3-2 victory. But on Monday, the Whalers faced the Panthers again – this time on the road – but lost 4-1.
Nantucket was shorthanded and without the services of top singles player Boyan Kalpazanov, which was a blow to the Whaler’s depth and forced every player to move one spot up the lineup. The lone victory for Nantucket was their second doubles pairing of Forbes Keating and Soren Edwardes, who won their match in straight sets, albeit close ones, 7-6, 7-6.
The Whalers are currently the #15 seed in the latest Div. 4 state tournament power rankings and are 5-4 this season. They will try to get back on track Wednesday, May 8 at home against the Sturgis West Navigators at 4 p.m.
