The girls tennis team earned a 4-1 victory at home over Cape Cod Academy Friday afternoon – improving their record to 3-3 this season.

Viki Bozhkova was the Whaler’s first singles player and won in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. She said her opponent was very talented and very good at hitting angles and making Bozhkova run for the ball across the court.

“However, I noticed that she was in pain, so I used that to my advantage, and I hit extra hard at her on the last couple of sets, which led me to be able to win in the end,” Bozhkova said. “Next time, I should work on my aggression because I played very safe at the baseline and many of my errors that came from my carefulness, led me to lose those points. Overall, it was a great match. And my opponent, an eighth grader, was very, very good.”

Sara Dussault was the second singles player and won her match in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. She said she felt she played pretty well and was able to control her ground strokes.

“When I came up to the net, I feel like I was pretty confident with that too and had some good shots,” Dussault said. “I need to work on approach shots and hitting with an angle. I used my opponent’s weaknesses to win. She was not in the right mindset, and I would hit right to her weaknesses. Overall, I feel like I had a really good match, but there’s still things I want to work on.”

Whaler head coach Luke Thornewill said one of the stars of the match was their third singles player, senior Sutton LeBrecht. Thornewill said he believes LeBrecht had a stunning first set and dominated it with aggressive play and confidence.

Nantucket will be back in action Monday, April 13th at home against St. John Paul II at 4 p.m. You can view photos from Friday’s match here.

The boys lacrosse team picked up their fourth road victory of the season Saturday afternoon against the Plymouth South Panthers – beating them handily 17-4 to improve to 5-1 and shake off Thursday’s close 2-1 defeat on the island to Falmouth High School.

Whaler head coach Sam Aloisi said Plymouth South had some injuries and were playing without some key players, which led to the score being what it was.

Jeremy Jenkinson was still busy in net and called upon to make 13 saves. Arann Hanlon led the team with five goals and added an assist while Jake Grant finished with four goals and two assists. Senior Nolen Mosscrop finished with four goals and one assist.

Marco La Chuisa scored twice and added an assist. Noah Stringer scored one goal and tallied one assist. Tyler Miller scored one goal and finished with a team-high three assists. Kyden Whitfield and Andrick Mooney each had two assists. Soren Edwardes and Gaven Smith each had one assist.

Nantucket will attempt to improve to 6-1 when they travel to play the Sandwich Blue Knights on Tuesday, April 14th at 4 p.m. in a rematch of the 2024 Division 4 State Championship and last year's Round of 16 matchup, both of which were won by the Whalers.

On Friday, the Whalers lost 8-7 to Barnstable. Ava Watson went one for two at the plate with two runs batted in. Veena Stone also had one hit. Chloe Washington was walked three times and stole multiple bases. Head coach Kelly Mayette said her team was patient at the plate and drew 12 walks.

On Saturday, the Whalers lost 11-10 to O’Bryant, and Mayette wasn’t as enthusiastic about her team’s performance as she was about Friday.

Nantucket stole nine bases and Washington was once again right in the middle of the Whaler’s offensive production – hitting a home run. The Whalers combined for six hits with Sophia Yelverton, Ava Watson, Sianna Ivilova, Shelbi Harimon, and Verna Stone each tallying one hit, along with Washington’s home run.
