Softball Explodes For 22 Runs In Win Over Martha’s Vineyard

Early offensive production has been something Whaler softball head coach Grace-Anne Tornovish has been seeking out of her team all season long, and on Sunday they produced seven first inning runs to set the stage for a 22-run performance and a 22-6 victory over the Vineyard Sunday afternoon.
Shelbi Harimon and Sophia Yelverton led the Whaler rally in the first inning with triples. Nantucket had six hits in the inning and did all of their damage with two outs after their first two hitters flew out to left and center field.
The Whalers were able to score runs in every inning aside from the third inning. They generated three more runs in the second, two in the fourth inning, and five in the fifth inning and five in the sixth inning to end the game one inning early due to the mercy rule.
The win improved the softball team’s record to 2-8 this season and snapped their five-game losing streak as they had lost 17-12 just two days earlier on Friday to St. John Paul II.
Nantucket will try to win their third game of the year when they travel to play the Sturgis East Storm on Wednesday, May 7th at 3:15 p.m
Girls Lax Splits Pair Of Games Over The Weekend

The girls lacrosse team lost a close road matchup to Bridgewater-Raynham 11-9 on Friday but bounced back nicely on the road against Martha’s Vineyard with a 14-7 victory on Sunday. Nantucket is now 6-2 this season.
In the Whaler’s game against BR, Dylan Damian led the team with four goals. Mayson Lower had two goals. Louisa Beni, Claire Genthner, and Grace Hanlon each had one goal. Ella Douglas made three saves in the game.
In their matchup against the Vineyard, Lower led the way with five goals and four assists for nine points. Mia Beaudette scored three goals. Hanlon had two goals. Beni, Damian, and Suz Peraner each had one goal. Douglas made five saves in the win.
The Whalers will try to improve to 7-2 this season and remain inside the top 10 of the MIAA’s Div. 4 state tournament bracket when they travel to Barnstable to play the Red Hawks on Tuesday, May 6th at 3:30 p.m.

The boys and girls tennis teams played Rising Tide on Friday, with the boys at home and girls on the road. Both teams won their matches 5-0. Notably, the boys started seventh grader Toni Todorov as their number three single – marking his first career varsity start and he made head coach David Cheever proud with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over his opponent.
With the boys at 4-6 and the girls at 5-3, the boys will shift their sights to the Sturgis West Navigators, who they will play on Wednesday, May 7th at 4 p.m. on the road. The girls will play the Sturgis East Storm at home on Wednesday, May 7th at 4 p.m.
