The Whaler volleyball team was able to earn their first win of the fall on Monday when they traveled to play the Rising Tide Herons in Plymouth, beating them 3-0. Head coach Makaila Lyons said that she is happy for her team to win their first match and that she is continuing to preach to her players that getting off to fast starts will help ensure more wins are in their future.

"We're obviously so happy to have our first win under our belts, which is exciting, but we were talking today in our little debrief after every game, and we were saying obviously it feels good to win, but there were times where it didn't feel like we won," Lyons said. "I told the girls today, I told them yesterday, I told the other team and their coach, 'I felt like your team was hungrier than we were.' That's something we've been talking about and trying to work on is just getting hungry and making that happen earlier on. Sometimes we wait until the third set to really want to get after it. It has been our pattern so far this year, and we are going to work on breaking that.”

Senior captain Mariana Silva was the star of the day for the Whalers with 15 aces. Her serving played an integral role in Nantucket being able to control much of the match as they won in straight sets 25-10, 25-14, and 25-9. Kate Kinsella had five aces of her own and Julie Pires also had four aces.

"There were definitely some good pieces. We had some really strong serving streaks," Lyons said. “Mariana went on a streak. Kate Kinsella went on a streak, which was awesome for her. Kate really showed up (Monday). She is in right now for Bessie (Aguilar), so she's not technically a starter, but she's been really good. She got thrown into the SJP game, and she's been practicing rotation wise with us at practice. She had the serving streak, and then her coverage, we talked about it today too at practice, her coverage of blocking and attacks, she's just reading really well and getting really comfortable reading, which is awesome to see. I told all the girls I said, 'Look at Kate. Look at her coverage. She's always there.'"

Manu Coelho also had a season-high 25 assists in the match for Nantucket.

The Whalers will try to win their second consecutive match when they host the Sturgis East Storm on Wednesday, September 17th at 4:30 p.m.
