Since head coach David Cheever took over the boys tennis program five years ago, he has preached the importance of doubles in order to win matches – especially come tournament time. But this season the Whalers will be leaning on their top two singles players in senior captain Boyan Kalpazanov and junior Nik Krastev to lead a young group to success this spring.

“All of our doubles kids have zero experience, which takes us back to our years of COVID, but I think they are a higher caliber than our first year because they have all played a little bit,” Cheever said. “As you remember how did we ever win in the back of your mind filled with Cheever quotes? You win with doubles. You win in three and win in doubles. Boyan and Nik will need to step up. It is time for them to step up.”

The Whalers will also have sophomore Fuller Holland returning and he is expected to be the team’s number three singles player after serving as a steady presence on the team's doubles pairings last spring as a freshman.

"We have seven returning players and as all of your loyal readers will remember, we have (senior) Forbes (Keating) who stepped up in the playoffs last year too," Cheever said. "So he's back without a lot of experience in playing at varsity, but he stepped up for us when we needed him.”

Some other players expected to see an expanded role in doubles play are sophomore Thomas Schroeder and senior Ethan Watson.

Nantucket’s first match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2nd at home against the Monomoy Sharks at 4 p.m. You can view the boys tennis schedule here.
