This week’s Current Court Report is led by a pair of arraignments held during Tuesday’s Nantucket District Court session.
The first case revolves around a man alleged to have scared children away from a playground after throwing up gang signs, stealing a man’s phone at a bus stop, spitting on three Nantucket Police Officers, and attempting to kick an officer and hospital personnel.
The second notable case revolves around an individual involved in a minor car accident on Main Street over the summer, and he is being accused of threatening to stab the other driver.
Evan Carson Lopez, 33, of Nantucket was arraigned on Sept. 29 charges of assault & battery on a police officer, assault & battery, and disorderly conduct, as well as a Nov. 3 charge of assault & battery. He had not-guilty pleas entered on his behalf and he was ordered to return to court Jan. 21 for a pretrial hearing.
According to the police report, NPD was dispatched to the Hinsdale Park Discovery Playground off Old South Road at 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 29th after receiving a report that Lopez was “throwing gang signs at kids,” which scared them and prompted them to run away.
NPD recognized Lopez from a previous encounter and made him aware of the complaint. When Lopez asked police if he was free to go, they told him yes, and according to police he proceeded to run onto Old South Road – forcing a vehicle to slam on their brakes.
Lopez then ran over to a bus stop bench that had people sitting on it and police witnessed him get on one knee and grab a man’s phone out of his hands. When approached, the alleged victim told police he did not know Lopez and did not consent to being touched by him.
Later at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, police said that Lopez spit on three officers while attempting to kick one officer and hospital personnel.
Owen Perkins, 42, of Nantucket was arraigned on a July 27 charge of threatening to commit a crime. He had a not-guilty plea entered on his behalf and he was ordered to return to court Jan. 21 for a pretrial hearing.
According to the police report, NPD responded to a minor car accident on July 27 just after 1 p.m. on Main Street after receiving a report of a verbal altercation. The alleged victim told police upon arrival that Perkins allegedly yelled that he was going to stab him in the aftermath of the accident.
Perkins denied making any threats when asked by police, however in video and audio dashcam footage retrieved from the accident, police said that they could hear Perkins yelling “F*** you, F*** you, don’t even think about it. I’ll get out and stab you” at the same moment the cars appeared to collide.
In other Nantucket District Court news, Timothy D. Collette, 57, of Nantucket was arraigned on a Nov. 8 charge of violating an abuse prevention order. He had a not-guilty plea entered on his behalf and was ordered to return to court Dec. 2 for a pretrial hearing.
Julian Zabala-Contreras, 41, of Nantucket was arraigned on a Sept. 9 charge of credit card fraud under $1,200. He had a not-guilty plea entered on his behalf and was ordered to return to court Jan. 21 for a pretrial hearing.
