Island Resident’s Bail Revoked Following Cocaine Trafficking Charges

An island resident, Bernardo Alvarez Mejia, 46, was arraigned Monday in Nantucket District Court on charges of trafficking cocaine in an amount of 36 grams or more but less than 100 grams, and possessing a class B drug to distribute. The new charges violated the probation he was serving on a Nov. 27th, 2024, charge of assault and battery on a family/household member, prompting District Court Judge James Sullivan to revoke his bail on the prior charge and place cash bail on the new drug charges.
According to the Cape & Islands' District Attorney’s office, 41 grams of cocaine was found in Mejia’s bedroom distributed between two baggies. Numerous baggies were also found in his kitchen, and money was found in the home.

According to the police report, NPD detectives obtained a search warrant for Mejia's residence, a one-bedroom basement apartment on Celtic Drive. On Nov. 21st, detectives located two passports, a Social Security card, and multiple pieces of mail, all in Mejia's name. They found one small knotted corner cut baggie containing cocaine inside of a shopping bag that weighed seven grams, and another inside the apartment containing a larger amount of a hard, white powdery substance that weighed 34.3 grams. Tin foil was found inside his drawer, as well as a pink plastic bag consistent with being the packaging of a larger amount of a narcotic.
The DA’s office requested his bail be revoked on the existing case and $5,000 cash bail on the new charges while Mejia’s representation requested his bail not be revoked on the old charge and that he be released on $5,000 cash bail with a GPS monitoring device on the drug charges.
After hearing both sides, Sullivan placed $10,000 cash bail, $100,000 surety on the trafficking charge, $100 cash bail on the possession charge, and revoked Mejia’s bail on the assault and battery case. Mejia will now be transported to the Barnstable House of Corrections. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for December 22nd.
