After being lost on Nantucket for nearly a week, a little 9-year-old Boston terrier with vision problems named "Benzo" was discovered by a girl playing in her yard Saturday morning.

Benzo was quickly reunited with his family, the Curts, from Fairfield Conn., at their property in Tom Nevers.

The search for Benzo grew to dozens, perhaps hundreds, of island residents who fanned out across Tom Nevers and points beyond over the past five days to look for him. Posters were put up around the island, thermal drones were brought in to assist, and Benzo was spotted near downtown Nantucket but somehow managed to elude the search parties for days and made it all the way back to Tom Nevers.

Jana and Steve Curt, along with their kids Owen, 7, and Ronan, 5, had a joyful reunion with Benzo Saturday morning after a brief trip to Offshore Animal Hospital.

“We are so grateful for this incredible island,” Jana told the Current.

As for his unique name, which many have asked about, Jana said with a laugh “I’m a nurse. Benzos make you calm and he’s our anti-anxiety dog.”

Jana specifically mentioned and thanked island resident Beth Morris, who helped lead the search and organized people to find Benzo over the past five days. As many on Nantucket know, that’s what Beth does almost any time there’s a missing dog.
