The town has named Roque Miramontes, a former branch chief for the Centers For Disease Control employee and a physician assistant, as its new public health director.

Miramontes succeeds outgoing Health Department head Roberto Santamaria, who stepped down earlier this year to lead the Fairwinds counseling center.

"Mr. Miramontes has extensive expertise in environmental health, infectious disease epidemiology, program evaluation, and data analysis and has had leadership roles in every major national public health crisis over the past 15 years," the town stated in its announcement.

After a decade with the CDC, Miramontes was serving as its chief of the Data Management, Statistics and Evaluation Branch, Division of Tuberculosis Elimination, National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention in Atlanta.

The town stated that Miramontes will oversee all public health and communication initiatives of the Health Department, represent the town to local and state agencies and serve as the liaison for the Board of Health.

He will take over the job starting in September.
