A BMW sedan crashed into the Steamship Authority dock in Hyannis as the 2:45 boat was loading up, causing a large response by police and fire personnel, and sending at least one person to Cape Cod Hospital.
A witness at the scene told the Current all the vehicle’s airbags deployed. The driver seemed shaken up but otherwise uninjured, but a passenger was taken to hospital by ambulance, the witness said.
On Tuesday, the Steamship Authority issued the following statement regarding the accident:
“Shortly before 2:30 p.m., a vehicle that was in line to board the M/V Nantucket at the Hyannis Terminal unexpectedly accelerated and struck the traffic booth and railing of the Slip 1 transfer bridge. The transfer bridge is the loading bridge used by vehicles when they are driven onto a vessel. Steamship Authority personnel immediately tended to the individuals in the vehicle with the help of state and local authorities. The 2:45 p.m. departure of the M/V Nantucket was delayed approximately one hour as a result of the accident, but the vessel was able to be loaded with vehicles without further incident. Thankfully, no Authority personnel were injured."
The status of the injured passenger is not yet known.
