Fire Rips Through Unoccupied Summer Home Off Cliff Road

The Nantucket Fire Department battled a structure fire Wednesday night at 3 Shady Lane off Cliff Road.
The house on the small side street near Steps Beach had been shuttered for the winter and was unoccupied when the fire broke out. There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time and remains under investigation.
The property at 3 Shady Lane has been owned by the Carneal family, of Virginia, since the mid-1980s.
“We received a 911 call at 8:03pm from a passerby who stated that the house at 3 Shady lane was on fire,” Fire Chief Michael Cranson told the Current. “We arrived a short time later and found fire coming through the roof and the front window on the second floor. Crews were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire quickly but were on scene for just over four hours checking for extension and conducting overhaul.
“No one was home at the time the fire broke out, Cranson added. “There were no reported injuries by anyone including first responders. There were approximately 20 firefighters on scene and we had two engines, a ladder truck, an ambulance and two chiefs. We also responded to a medical emergency in another part of town during the fire. Great job by everyone involved and special thanks to dispatch and the PD who were extremely helpful during the event. The fire cause is under investigation at this point and we do not know how it started.”
