Habitat for Humanity Nantucket celebrated the completion of six new homes on Waitt Drive last weekend with a block party. The new dwellings represent the organization's largest project to date.

The six homes in the Waitt Drive development will provide six year-round families with the opportunity to become homeowners and put down roots in the community, the organization stated in an announcement.

Each family was selected through a lottery process and completed 350 hours of so-called "sweat equity" toward the construction of their home, working alongside Habitat volunteers and construction professionals throughout the building process.

The completion of Waitt Drive brings the total number of homes built by Habitat for Humanity Nantucket since its founding in 2001 to 22 homes.

“This is an extraordinary milestone for Habitat Nantucket and for the six families who will now call Waitt Drive home,” said Gennifer Costanzo of Habitat for Humanity Nantucket. “These homes represent much more than buildings. They represent stability, opportunity and a future for six Nantucket families. We are incredibly grateful to everyone in our community who helped make this project possible.”

The October 4 Block Party brought together the new homeowners, their families, Habitat volunteers, community partners, donors, and friends to celebrate the completion of the village and the beginning of a new chapter for the families.

"Waitt Drive was made possible through the tremendous generosity and support of the Nantucket community," the organization stated. "Habitat for Humanity Nantucket extends its gratitude to the Town of Nantucket, Nantucket Affordable Housing Trust, Community Foundation of Nantucket, Nantucket Fund, Community Preservation Committee, Blackwell & Associates, Evenflow Ducted Air, R.A. Energy, Siasconset Electric and the many additional businesses, organizations, volunteers and individuals who contributed their time, expertise and resources to the project."

“Projects of this scale are only possible because of the incredible collaboration and generosity of our community,” Costanzo added. “We are deeply grateful to every person and organization that helped turn this vision into six homes for Nantucket families.”
