A hit-and-run accident in downtown Nantucket Thursday afternoon caused damage to both the Methodist Church and the Pacific National Bank.

A black Dodge Ram pickup truck went off the road and onto the lawn of the Methodist Church around 4 p.m. The truck clipped the edge of one of the church's pillars, ran over a street sign, and then collided with the side of the bank.

The impact shook the building, according to workers inside the bank, and brought a small crowd of onlookers to the scene of the accident. The female driver of the truck then began to pull away from the crash scene even as the crowd urged her to stop and not leave the area.

Island resident Emma Knutti spotted the truck pulled over by a Nantucket Police Department cruiser at the Lily Pond park a few minutes after the accident. It's not yet clear if the woman has been charged by police.
