Nantucket Cottage Hospital has broken ground on a new workforce housing project on Meadowview Drive.

On Monday, crews began site work to prepare for the construction of three houses at 60 Meadowview Drive that will include a total of eight bedrooms and eight baths. The units are modular homes manufactured off-island by Dreamline Modular Homes and are expected to be installed and complete by the late spring of 2023.

The project is being funded with money raised during Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s $120 million capital campaign for the new hospital facility. Roughly $20 million of the capital campaign dollars were earmarked for employee housing initiatives following the expansion of the campaign that was announced in 2016 with the Percelay family’s $10 million gift.

The lot where the units will be built was created from an existing lot that the hospital received in an estate gift from island native James R. Dennis in 2002. The hospital rented the existing three-unit property from Mr. Dennis from 2002 until his passing in 2018, providing him income from the property during his lifetime.

The new housing project comes on the heels of the hospital’s $3.7 million acquisition in March 2022 of two newly constructed 6-bedroom duplexes in the Richmond Great Point subdivision, which total 20 bedrooms and baths in seven units.

Chris Glowacki, Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s chief development officer and vice president for strategy and community health, said the hospital has not yet identified a specific segment of the hospital’s workforce that will have access to the new units.

“We have many different workforce housing needs and there is no specific designation on a property by property basis,” Glowacki said.
