A woman suffered serious injuries Thursday morning after the Jeep she was traveling in careened off Milestone Road due to icy conditions and struck a tree.

The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, prompting a large response by Nantucket Police and Fire Department personnel, and a heavy rescue unit. Milestone Road was closed in both directions for nearly an hour at the accident scene, which was located near the Serengeti conservation property.

The female occupant had to be extricated from the vehicle and suffered a broken femur as a result of the crash. After being transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, she was flown by Boston Medflight to a mainland hospital for further treatment.

First responders at the scene stated the black ice on island roads Thursday morning was creating treacherous conditions, and urged motorists to drive with caution and leave a buffer of several car lengths from other vehicles.

A dog named Chuck that was in the vehicle when it crashed ran away from the scene toward the Tom Nevers area, prompting a search of the area by volunteers.

Island resident Jo Perkins reported that she found the dog outside her residence, and it was transported to Offshore Animal Hospital for treatment.

"Found Chuck resting in the sunlight outside my front door," Perkins wrote on the Current's Facebook post about the lost dog. "Quick text to pACKactive who then contacted the owner’s dad. Meanwhile I called NPD. Not knowing the prior circumstances, both Amy and NPD relayed best not to startle him so I waited on the other side of the door with water, leash, and treats until dad arrived. Such a sweet pup! Healing wishes to both mom and pup. The communication, concern, and care in this community is a blessing."
