The Nantucket Fire Department responded to a diesel fuel spill off Youngs Way on Wednesday morning that was large enough to require a response from the state Department of Environmental Protection and a professional cleanup effort.

Responding firefighters estimated that approximately 20 gallons of fuel had leaked from an excavator at the property, which appeared to be a storage area for equipment and heavy machinery.

"NFD used oil absorbent materials to reduce the spread of the spill, contain product that had been released, and removed contaminated absorbent material to appropriate containers to be removed by the LSP (licensed site professional)," said Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Vamosi. "Nantucket Board of Health was also notified and responded to assist. Department of Environmental Protection is now working with the responsible parties and LSP."

Vamosi identified the excavator's owner as Unique Homes. The property has a physical address of 33 Old South Road, and is owned by a limited liability company registered to Cliff Schorer, of Worcester, Mass.

"They have contracted a LSP (licensed Site Professional), Franklin Corp.," Vamosi said. "All parties involved are working with DEP under their regulations and recommendations."

Vamosi said the amount of diesel fuel that spilled was unknown, "however, it appeared to be above what is a reportable quantity as defined by the Department of Environmental Protection as any spill larger than 10 gallons of diesel fuel."
