The driver of a blue pickup truck crashed into a utility pole late Friday night on Tom Nevers Road, snapping the pole and leaving hundreds of island residents without power through Saturday afternoon as National Grid employees worked to fix the damage. The truck was abandoned and the incident was deemed a hit and run.

Members of the Nantucket Fire and Police Departments responded to the area of Milestone Road and Tom Nevers Road late Friday evening following the report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival at the crash scene, public safety personnel observed a blue pickup truck that had collided with a telephone pole at the intersection and snapped it in half.

Police officers searched the area for the driver into the early morning hours of Saturday, but were unable to find the operator.

On Thursday, Nantucket Police identified the operator of the vehicle involved in the crash as Vincent G. Goulding, 25, a Nantucket resident. Goulding has been charged with the following offenses stemming from the incident:

  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Leaving the scene of property damage
  • Speeding (60mph in a posted 45 mph zone)
  • Marked lanes violation
  • No inspection sticker
  • Number plate violation to conceal ID
  • Unregistered motor vehicle
  • Uninsured motor vehicle

Both roads were blocked off to traffic Friday night, and National Grid was called to the scene to address the pole and downed wires in the area.

Tom Nevers residents reported losing power late Saturday morning in several messages sent to the Current. According to National Grid, 600 island residents were without power in the neighborhoods off Tom Nevers Road while its crews fixed the snapped pole and wires. Power was eventually restored Saturday evening.
