For the first time in two decades, an adult swim meet will take place at the Nantucket Community Pool on May 15.

For the first time in two decades, the Nantucket Community Pool will be hosting an adult-only swim meet next month. The Nantucket Community School announced on Tuesday that this event is part of a broader effort to expand adult programming and re-engage the island’s adult swimming community.

"When I moved back to the island after college, I didn't feel there was anything for me at the pool besides open lap swim," Aquatics Coordinator Isabelle Roberts said in the announcement. "Expanding our adult programs at the pool will bring swimmers like me back together, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and having fun while doing it. I'm going to have to get creative with what we do for additional adult programming, and I'm excited to see what the future holds."

Registration for this meet is $25 and it will take place on Friday, May 15 from 5:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The meet will feature nine races, including 50, 100, 200, and 500 yard freestyle; 50 and 100 yard backstroke; 50 and 100 yard breaststroke; 50 and 100 yard butterfly; 100 and 200 yard individual medley; and a 200 yard mixed stroke event.

"Competitive swimming does not have to end after college," former Aquatics Director Jim Pignato said. Pignato has been helping the Community School organize the event and was responsible for spearheading the last adult swim meet.

“We have a vibrant, engaged, and active adult athletic community on Nantucket," Pignato continued. "With our state-of-the-art aquatic facility that the youth have benefited from competitively, giving adults the opportunity is the next progression. I hope an event like this could be the catalyst for a more robust master's swimming program on island.”

The meet is not a sanctioned Masters swim meet, however it will utilize the Nantucket Community Pool starter, timing pads, and Colorado Timing Systems scoreboard, allowing participants to record official times.
