Nantucket Litter Derby Teams Collect Nearly 15 Tons Of Trash Around The Island
Nantucket Current •

Dozens of island residents fanned out across Nantucket over the weekend with just one goal: gather as much trash as possible. And boy, did they ever.
Twenty-three teams participated in the 6th annual Nantucket Litter Derby on Saturday and Sunday, and despite the cold and rainy conditions, they collected 14.93 tons of trash.

That preliminary count, according to Derby organizer Leah Mojer, includes:
- 650 pounds of plastic debris
- 1,700 pounds of glass
- 14,800 pounds of metal
- 8,000 pounds of non-recyclable, non-compostable waste
- 2,000 pounds of hazmat materials
"We are still laughing and smiling from the incredible fun at today’s weigh-in, where 23 teams pulled off a truly epic feat," Mojer said in a social media post. "All kinds of wild and weird trash collected, sorted, and sent to its forever home at the dump."

At the afterparty for the event on Sunday at Cisco Brewers, Mojer announced the winning teams that collected the most trash over the two-day Derby:
- First place: "Cleaniacks"
- Second place: The Nantucket Land Bank
- Third place: "The Trash Picker Uppers" otherwise known as the Dussault family
- Honorable mention: Team J Pepper Frazier Real Estate
- Rising stars: The Nantucket Lighthouse School team
