The Nantucket Police Department was recognized with a Gold Award at the Annual AAA Traffic Safety Awards on October 20th for its ongoing commitment to improving traffic safety throughout the community.

"This recognition reflects the collective efforts of the department to make our roads and paths safer for everyone," Police Chief Jody Kasper said. "These efforts include apprehending impaired operators; providing traffic safety education in local schools and throughout the community; sharing traffic safety information through social media; and using data to guide enforcement through our Targeted Traffic Enforcement (TTE) program, which focuses on areas where speeding is a concern. The department also conducts targeted enforcement of laws governing e-bikes and other micromobility devices in areas throughout the community and has updated policies and practices related to collision response and vehicle safety equipment.

Kasper said the award also recognizes the broader community partnerships and initiatives that support traffic safety such as the active participation of the Traffic Safety Staff Workgroup and the Town’s continued evaluation and development of roadway improvements designed to enhance safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. She noted some of the work includes the development of new multi-use paths that provide safer options for people traveling throughout the community.

"Improving traffic safety requires a comprehensive approach that combines education, data-driven enforcement, effective policies, community engagement, and roadway improvements," Kasper said. "This Gold Award reflects the shared commitment of NPD, Town officials and staff, the Traffic Safety Staff Workgroup, and community partners to addressing traffic safety concerns and creating safer roads and paths for everyone.

"NPD thanks all department personnel, Town staff, community partners, and residents who contribute to these ongoing efforts," Kasper continued. "This recognition belongs to the entire community and reinforces our continued commitment to making safety a priority for everyone who travels our roads and paths."
