Nantucket Police are searching for a missing 20-year-old man who was last seen on the island nearly two weeks ago.

Jhan Barbosa's last known location was the town pier on Washington Street on Oct. 5, police stated on Tuesday, and he was believed to be headed to a relative's house in the area of Hinsdale Road and Macys Lane.

In a follow-up interview about the case, Nantucket Police Department Lt. Angus MacVicar told the Current that Barbosa was reported missing on Oct. 11 by a family member who said he had not been heard from since Oct. 5.

"The family member didn't report it as being suspicious," MacVicar said. "He's a transient worker and doesn't have a local address."

Following the initial report, MacVicar said island police searched for Barbosa on Nantucket over the ensuing six days before deciding to alert the public and ask for assistance on Tuesday morning.

"We didn't ignore it," MacVicar said. "We still went to known locations where we've had interactions in the past. We continued to do that up until today when we decided it would be good to get it out there and do everything we can to locate him. We're not sure if he's on the island, but felt it was important to get the message out."

MacVicar added that police still do not consider the case to be suspicious in nature.

Barbosa was one of two suspects arrested by Nantucket police last October for a series of car break-ins in the mid-island area.

He is described as 6'2" tall, with brown eyes and brown hair, weighing approximately 160 pounds. Barbosa has a tattoo on his left forearm of a sun and ocean, police said.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the Nantucket Police Department at 508-228-1212 or email aschwenk@police.Nantucket-ma.gov or anonymously at crimetips@police.Nantucket-ma.gov.
