The Nantucket Public Schools hosted its annual Nantucket Special Olympics event at Vito Capizzo Stadium this morning with roughly 50 students participating and 20 volunteers.
School teacher Natalie Thompson, who oversees the event, said that the Special Olympics event is student-run, with teachers and adults operating in a supervisor’s role.

Members of the Nantucket Fire and Police Departments also attended the event and helped run the activity stations while playing with the kids. The NFD & NPD fund the shirts and medals that are given to the kids who participate.
Dozens of students came out to support the Special Olympics participants with signs and cheers, as they filled the bleachers and lined up along the fencing. Student volunteers are from Thompson’s PE Pals class as well as from the school’s best buddies’ group.
