A powerful winter storm that has impacted a wide swath of the country blanketed Nantucket with snow on Sunday.

The major storm prompted town and school officials to announce the closure of municipal facilities on Monday. The public schools, town buildings, and the landfill are all closed as the Department of Public Works continues to clear roads and sidewalks.

"The safety of our students, staff, families, and the entire Nantucket community is of utmost importance," Superintendent Beth Hallett wrote in her message to the school community announcing the closure late Sunday morning.
