And just like that, summer is in the rearview mirror and we are back to school.
Island students returned to classes Tuesday morning as the Nantucket Public Schools opened for the first day of the 2024-25 school year.
According to school superintendent Beth Hallett during Tuesday's School Committee meeting, there were 1,731 students enrolled in the public school system on the first day - a record-high for the island.
"That is the highest number we have seen to date," Hallett said. "Our biggest jump was in enrollment at NIS (grades 3-5) with an additional 20 students since last June. Coming into second place is the high school with an additional 16 students since June. NES enrollment is currently 19 students lower than it was in June, and CPS has stayed almost exactly the same."
Hallett added that Kindergarten students will begin on Thursday, September 5 and Pre-K will begin on Monday, September 9.
Good luck to all the students, teachers, parents, and school staff, and best wishes for a great year! Below are some photos of young students arriving with their parents, reuniting with their friends, and reacquainting themselves with their teachers and school administrators.
