Racist Bumper Sticker Sent To Island Hispanic Restaurant

Mayra Escobar-Aguilar, who owns the Hispanic restaurant Casa Real on Macy Lane with her husband, opened her mail at the establishment on Monday and was shocked at what had arrived.
Inside a handwritten, stamped envelope with no return address were two stickers carrying a racist, hateful message.
"Nantucket is overrun with Spanish criminal illegals," the sticker read. "Murderers, rapist, drug dealers, tax cheats welfare fraud."
The bottom of the sticker had the phone numbers for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
"Upsetting to see how many people think we are all murderers, rapists, and live off the government, welfare," Escobar-Aguilar, an immigrant originally from El Salvador, told the Current. "When the majority of people I know pay taxes even with an ITIN number. I haven’t heard of anyone else getting these stickers. Maybe we were a target because we are a Hispanic restaurant."
Other restaurants, however, have also received the stickers in the mail, according to one downtown restaurant owner.
Regardless, the message left Escobar-Aguilar disgusted.
"Me and my whole family are U.S. citizens, it's just disgusting for whoever did this," she said. "I have been in the country for 30 years, working hard, paying taxes, we don't live off of welfare, and we have an established business. In other words, we are good citizens."
Escobar-Aguilar said Tuesday afternoon that she was considering reporting the incident to Nantucket police, but had not yet done so.
