The Sconset Footbridge, a historic landmark in the village on the east end of the island, has been closed by the town following a hit-and-run incident that caused significant damage.

The town is now asking the public for assistance in tracking down the perpetrator who struck the 152-year-old bridge with a vehicle or equipment at some point before Labor Day weekend.

"The damage goes beyond cosmetics — the vertical columns on the north side at Gully Road were knocked off their footings, causing the walking deck to slope," the town stated Friday in an announcement. "Repairs will begin as soon as possible, but until then, the bridge will remain closed for safety. If you’re a Sconset resident and saw or heard anything about a large truck, trailer, delivery load, or equipment in the Codfish Park area before Labor Day weekend, please let us know. Your local knowledge could help us identify the responsible party for this costly hit-and-run."

According to the Nantucket Historical Association, the Sconset Footbridge "was built by Charles H. Robinson, and Dr. Franklin A. Ellis in 1873. At 90 feet long, the bridge was built to span the gulley and to connect the new houses with the main part of Sconset. The bridge was a popular spot for taking in the view of the ocean while meeting other fashionable strollers."
