Town Leaders Hold Summit On E-Bike Safety

Town and community leaders met Tuesday in an effort to reduce serious injuries and deaths from crashes involving e-bikes and similar devices.

“The meeting was convened in response to growing concern over crashes involving e-bikes and other micromobility devices, and the potential for these incidents to result in serious injury or death,” the town wrote in a press release. “Participants reviewed current initiatives underway across their respective organizations and discussed additional strategies to improve safety throughout the community.”

Last year, a string of serious e-bike accidents prompted significant community concern and led to policy changes at the Nantucket Public Schools and an increased focus on enforcement from the police department.

The police believe that the heightened enforcement has improved compliance with e-bike regulations, and the public schools reported a “dramatic decline” in the number of students using e-bikes soon after the new initiative began.

Tuesday’s meeting is notable in that it represents alignment across many of the town’s key institutions. Participants included representatives from the police, fire, planning and land use, public works and communications departments, as well as the public schools and the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

“As the popularity of e-bikes and other micromobility devices continues to grow, so does our responsibility to work together to reduce the risk of serious crashes,” said Chief Jody Kasper of the Nantucket Police Department. “No single organization can solve this issue alone. By bringing together our public safety, healthcare, education, planning, and communications partners, we can develop practical, community-wide solutions that help keep everyone safe.”

According to a press release from the town, topics of discussion included improving signage and maintenance along multi-use paths, increasing public awareness about vegetation and other encroachments that reduce sightlines, expanding partnerships with local bicycle rental businesses to promote safe riding practices, and increasing education for parents and families. The group also discussed ways to strengthen coordination between agencies.
