A pedestrian was struck and run over by the driver of an SUV in the downtown Stop & Shop parking lot on Monday, prompting a large public safety response to the waterfront.
The circumstances of the crash are not yet known, but the victim - a woman in her sixties - had to be extricated from underneath the vehicle. After being rushed to Nantucket Cottage Hospital by ambulance, she was quickly transported by Medflight helicopter to a mainland hospital. Her condition is not known as of Tuesday evening.
"We did receive a call at approximately 1:30 p.m. for a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle in the Stop and Shop Parking Lot downtown," Nantucket Fire Chief Michael Cranson told the Current. "Upon our arrival we found the victim, a woman in her sixties, under the vehicle. We removed the patient, and transported her to Nantucket Cottage Hospital with serious injuries. I am unaware of the circumstances regarding the crash itself. Nantucket Police, Community Service Officers and Fire were all on scene. I do not know the status of the patient’s condition at this time."
Cranson confirmed the woman was later transported by Medflight helicopter to a facility off-island. The incident prompted public safety officials to rope off the downtown Stop & Shop parking lot with yellow police tape before opening it back up later Monday afternoon. The vehicle that struck the woman appeared to be a Rivian SUV with Connecticut plates.
It remains unknown what may have caused the accident, or if anyone involved will face charges. The Nantucket Police Department declined to comment about the situation.
