A Heartfelt Goodbye After 24 Years On Federal Street

To the editor: In 1996, finances were tough for me. On my birthday that year, a friend sent me a necklace along with a card. The card said that if I was interested in representing the product, I should call the number provided. So, I did.
The company offered to send me a selling kit for $750, which included necklaces, earrings, and bracelets—each piece beautiful and unique. The plan was straightforward: I would sell the items at their suggested prices, keeping 50% of the profits, with the other half going to the company. Although $750 felt like a big stretch at the time, I decided to take a chance. And that’s how my business journey began.
A friend offered me shared space at #9 Old South Wharf, where I sold all summer long. After a couple of years, I had built a loyal following, especially among the boaters who came and went from the island. But in my second year, the woman I shared rent with was told she could no longer lease the space. I was devastated—how would I find a new place to keep my business alive?
As a last resort, I reached out to Winthrop, the leasing agent managing much of Nantucket’s commercial real estate. Henry Wyner showed me a space at 18 Federal Street. It needed a lot of work, and the rent was more than four times as much per year per year. I went home and cried—how would I ever manage that?
But I was determined. Despite my fear and uncertainty, I decided to go for it. For a time, I shared the space with John Evans, and together, we made it work.
Now, 24 years later, 18 Federal Street has become so much more than just a business. Over the years, John and I have traveled to many countries, seeking out unique jewelry, handbags, and clothing to bring back to our customers.
But what I’ll cherish most are the relationships I’ve built along the way. My customers have been the heart and soul of my journey—loyal, kind, and inspiring. I’ve had the honor of meeting extraordinary women and men from all over the world, and their stories, whether joyful or difficult, have enriched my life.
A shout-out to all the young women who helped me over the years—now lawyers, doctors, artists, and homemakers—who still come by to say hello. THANK YOU!
As I close this chapter, it’s time for me to embrace new adventures. John and I plan to spend more time in New York City, taking in every Broadway and off-Broadway play, visiting museums, exploring Central Park, and savoring great food. Summers will be spent with my children, grandchildren, and my new great-grandson.
While I am stepping away from the storefront, I’ll still have a presence on Nantucket for those who want to explore the collection, and my website will remain active at vanderbiltcollection.com.
Thank you for 24 unforgettable years. I am grateful beyond words for the love, support, and memories you’ve given me. I look forward to what’s next and hope to stay connected in new ways. If you have any questions or just want to stay in touch, feel free to reach out at bvanderbiltcol@aol.com.
