Downyflake Owners Thank The Island Community

Paté Kennedy and Ron Oldham •

To the editor: While memories are still fresh of the anticipation of the first bite into a warm donut as you entered the Downyflake doors, and the satisfaction of a full belly of blueberry pancakes as you left the building, Chef Ron and I want to thank the Nantucket community.

We have been honored to have had the opportunity to head the stewardship of this iconic island eatery, and thank you for your patronage and support during our 11 years at her helm.

Thank you also for the kindness that so many have extended to us in the recent weeks. The phone calls, e-mails, flowers and gift cards have been overwhelming.

There have been many people who have helped us through the years: Karsten and Julie Reinemo, Mark Hogan and Susan Tate, and a team of amazing staff members. Our current Downyflake staff has been especially remarkable.

They never wavered in their professionalism and positivity as they faced the challenges of first working through a pandemic, and then recently having to close their beloved place of employment. Ron and I have been so proud to have been a part of their team.

We have had a number of our customers reach out with ideas about where to take the Downyflake next. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and will explore your suggestions. We have told our staff that we hope to have a direction by the end of the year and will keep the community informed.

Sincerely grateful,

Paté Kennedy and Ron Oldham
