Former NHS Lacrosse Star Supports Turf Field Proposal

To the editor: I am writing to you as a proud alumna of Nantucket High School, Class of 2024, and a current Division I lacrosse player at Vanderbilt University. I understand that the committee is considering the installation of a turf field at NHS, and I would like to share my full support for this proposal.
Playing lacrosse for Nantucket alongside my teammates, coaches, and community remains one of the greatest experiences of my life. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 during my freshman year, our program thrived. We reached the Final Four for my sophomore year, and the Elite Eight both junior and senior year. Wearing the “W” across my chest and representing Whaler Pride will always be among my proudest memories.
However, I also remember the challenges of competing on our home field. Hosting games was often difficult and, at times, embarrassing. Visiting players and officials saw the uneven ground, bare patches, and exposed sprinkler heads that made the field unsafe and unpredictable. Meanwhile, many of our competitors benefited from turf facilities that offer consistent, clean, and professional-grade playing conditions. Before major games, especially during our Elite Eight runs, I worried whether our field would even be deemed safe enough to play.
Throughout my years at NHS, I also witnessed several talented student-athletes transfer to boarding schools with better facilities, including turf fields. If they had stayed, I truly believe Nantucket High would have had multiple state championship teams. Upgraded athletic facilities are not just about prestige; they are about retaining talent, ensuring safety, and building school pride.
During my senior year’s Powder Puff game, I landed awkwardly on the uneven grass, badly sprained my ankle, and missed my final hockey season. At the time, I feared the injury would jeopardize my ability to play college lacrosse. It required months of physical therapy and repeated trips to Boston Children’s Hospital because of the poor field conditions.
For the reasons of athlete safety, competitive performance, and school pride, I strongly urge the committee to approve the installation of an artificial turf field at Nantucket High School. The next generation of Whaler athletes deserves facilities that match their dedication and talent.
Thank you for your time and for supporting the future of Nantucket athletics.
Sincerely,
Bailey Lower
