In Their Words - Part Two - Louise Conway

Kathy Grieder •

To the editor: Back in 2024, I stopped by Our Island Home to visit some friends. As I was there, I decided to ask them how they felt about their care and about their thoughts on a new Our Island Home.

This is my second resident interview:

Louise Conway – arrived on Nantucket in 1949 and spent most of her adult life here. At the age of 98 she felt fortunate to be able to stay at Our Island Home.

I asked her, as a resident here, what do you think of Our Island Home?

“It’s a godsend to me. I couldn’t survive without Our Island Home. I am no longer able to walk because of a stroke. They took me in and have guided me in the right direction. We desperately need to keep the Island Home. Let’s hope the new Island Home is coming.

The care I have been getting here is absolutely the best. There are activities and entertainment but I can’t always attend. I have slowed down.

I may not live long enough to get this published, but I hope I do”.

Louise came to Our Island Home in 2023 and passed away on May 4, 2025 at the age of 100.

Please vote "yes" at Town Meeting on May 4th at 4:30 and the Annual Town Election on Tuesday, May 19th 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. to build the new Island Home for island residents like Louise who contributed to the fabric of our community throughout her lifetime.

This is our last chance to Save Our Island Home.
