Trust The School Committee, Vote Yes On Article 12

To the editor: As the debate over Vito Capizzo Stadium continues, it’s important we come back to a simple question: who is entrusted to make decisions for our schools?

The Nantucket School Committee is the governing body of our school system. They are elected by this community to make thoughtful, informed decisions with one priority in mind—our students’ well-being. That includes their mental health, their safety, and their ability to fully participate in school life.

We’ve seen this leadership before. When the School Committee made the decision to restrict cell phones during the school day, it was done to improve focus, reduce distraction, and support student mental health. It wasn’t easy, but it was the right call — one made squarely in the interest of students.

This is no different.

The proposal for Vito Capizzo Stadium — with a synthetic turf field, a synthetic track, and an ADA-compliant stadium—is about creating safe, reliable, and inclusive facilities for our student-athletes and the broader Nantucket community. It’s about reducing injuries, increasing access, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to participate and compete.

We ask our School Committee to lead. We trust them to evaluate complex issues, weigh the scientific facts, and act responsibly.

Now we should stand behind that leadership.

On Nantucket, we show up for our kids — this is one of those moments. Vote YES on Article 12 and trust your elected Nantucket School Committee to do their jobs.

Sincerely,
Jennie Cook
