Kudos For Court Case Coverage

To the editor: I’m writing to commend an editorial choice in the December 9, 2025 Nantucket Current Court Report. Typically, the report includes the names of individuals accused of crimes, even though they are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately, having one’s name permanently linked to an accusation can amount to a lasting penalty regardless of the case’s outcome.

In matters involving allegations of sexual or other forms of violence against a minor, identifying the accused can also make it easy to infer the identity of the child —especially when the relationship is described in ways such as “a child living in the home” or “a stepchild.”

For this reason, I was relieved to see that, in this instance, The Current chose not to publish the name of the adult accused, prioritizing the protection of the minor involved. I appreciate this considerate decision and hope to see similar care exercised more widely across media outlets.

With thanks,
