Let The Buoys Remain

Bruce Courson •

To the editor: I have lived and sailed off Nantucket for 35 years. Had a chart plotter, and a compass at the helm. Rarely looked at the compass, but it was backup.

Returning into the harbor with dense fog, the sight of a bell, whistle or visual sighting of a navigational buoy was important. Taking out the markers is like ripping the compass of my helm. Redundancy is critical at sea.

Please, let the buoys remain. They were put there for a purpose and are still necessary for the prudent sailor.
