Praise For The Kozlowskis And Shame On The Current

Gerilyn Brewer and Henry Mueller •

To the editor: On October 31st, we read in the Current that the Kozlowski’s are saving the Nantucket Pharmacy. We thank them for our being able to continue to delight our grandchildren with ice cream scoops and frappe’s from the soda fountain.

The article, unfortunately, ended with two paragraphs mentioning Mr. Kozlowski’s incarceration. Those paragraphs were a particularly distasteful end to an article celebrating the Kozlowski’s enabling our community to be able to continue a 50-year Nantucket tradition.

If the author felt compelled to mention Mr. Kozlowski’s incarceration, perhaps they should also have spoken about the essential work both Kozlowski’s have done since Mr. Kozlowski’s release. Mr. Kozlowski has served at length as the Chairperson of the Fortune Society; a group working to support successful reentry from incarceration and promote alternatives to incarceration. Mrs. Kozlowski serves as the President of the Women’s Prison Association, which works to empower women and LBGTQIA+ individuals to redefine their lives in the face of injustice and incarceration. If ever there were people who answered the bottom line question, “what good can come from this,” the Kozlowski’s have done so.

It was also lazy journalism. Mr. Kozlowski’s incarceration is old news. The two paragraphs mentioning his incarceration and his gratitude towards the support he received from Nantucketers were lifted word-for-word from a previous article.

We think the Nantucket Current can do better.
