Remembering Lucille Jordan
Jeanne Miller •
To the editor: “Early Childhood Education is the key to the betterment of society” - Maria Montessori.
No one believed that quote more than Lucille Jordan. She was determined to provide Nantucket’s youngest community members with the best start in life and to thereby produce strong citizens for the future.
Lucille had a vision to build a Montessori pre-school to enhance the options parents had for education on Nantucket. A young mother herself she fell in love with the Montessori Philosophy and the Island of Nantucket. Her dream to create a school on the Island came true with a huge amount of work and determination from Lucille at every level. The Montessori Children’s House of Nantucket has been nurturing children from hundreds of families for over 40 years and providing a strong foundation for their future. Many of these students have gone on to become leaders in our community and productive citizens all over the world. Lucille your legacy is strong!
Lucille passed away on Monday, July 24th. We have lost a strong and caring person who truly made a difference in our community. Although the guiding light that Lucille provided has gone out, her gift of quality education to our community goes on in each of the students who have had the opportunity to attend The Montessori Children’s House of Nantucket program. She made this little light of ours shine on and on and on.
Jeanne Miller,
Former head of the Montessori Children's House of Nantucket
