The Netflix film adaptation of Nantucket author Elin Hilderbrand's best-selling murder mystery novel "The Perfect Couple" was released Thursday on the streaming platform
"To think all that started with me and a pen and paper in my Nantucket kitchen blows my mind," Hilderbrand told the Current on Thursday. "I had to wait 24 years for one of my novels to be adapted but it was worth it."
The six-episode limited series features some major Hollywood stars, including Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, and Omar Epps. Hilderbrand was in Los Angeles on Thursday with her daughter Shelby to attend the full red carpet premiere with the cast (including Kidman and Schreiber), along with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
The filming began in early 2023, and while there are some scenes on Nantucket, most of it was filmed in Chatham, Mass., where portions of the Cape Cod town were converted to appear as though they were Nantucket, including a faux Nantucket Police Department facade.
Still, island residents will recognize a few Nantucket favorites, including the tall ship Lynx in Nantucket Harbor, and Mitchell's Book Corner. There's even a song by former Nantucket resident and recording artist Meghan Trainor called "Criminals" featured in the series.
"Local Nantucketers will know that much of this was filmed on the Cape and not Nantucket, but once I visited the set I realized there’s no way Nantucket could have handled a production like this," Hilderbrand said. "The Hy-Line scenes were filmed in Hyannis. But the show does include plenty of Nantucket references."
