Meet Nantucket’s last-minute leap year baby!

On Thursday, February 29 at 11:56 p.m., Sadianett Rodriguez Berrios
and Edilbert Marte Perez, along with the labor and delivery team at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, welcomed a beautiful baby boy to the world. Edien Marte Rodriguez was not expected to be born before midnight, but he was having none of that.

There are usually only 28 days in the month of February. But once every four years we get a February 29th. So-called “Leap Years” were established as a correction due to the fact that Earth’s orbit doesn’t exactly fit the 365-day calendar.

In its announcement, the hospital joked "Please return to this space on February 29, 2028, when we celebrate Edien’s 'first' birthday."
