Obituary: Alec Wheeler, 1972 - 2024
Nantucket Current •
Nantucket resident Alec Wheeler died on February 2, 2024, at the age of 52.
He was a respected craftsman, gifted athlete, and caring soul. Alec loved his life in the mountains, on the beaches, in the wind, and on the water - and with the friends and families in the Nantucket community he called home.
Most recently, Alec was honored to serve as construction lead, supporting the owner in the restoration of a beautiful Nantucket home. His friends report that he skipped to work every day.
Michigan was Alec’s childhood home. He graduated from Marshall High School and within a year moved to the mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado. His talents grew in skateboarding and snowboarding, earning him a commercial sponsorship. He traveled often to the mountains in Canada and throughout the Pacific Northwest, eventually settling in Nantucket in 2006.
Always game for adventure, Alec’s life was fullest while trekking treacherous trails to snowboard a remote couloir; designing, dancing, and ripping through skateparks; and carefully selecting the perfect wave to soar through the wind and water. A lifetime of family and friends were fortunate to share in his spirit of adventure, kindness, loyalty, curiosity, and athletic mischief.
Alec’s son Tayte summed it up well: “He was the coolest dude” - and we will cherish our memories forever.
Alec is survived by his son Tayte, his mother Kay, his stepmother Karen; his siblings Andrea, Kate, and Terry (niece Gracelynn), Lindsey and Chad; nephews and nieces Tyler, Kieran, Amanda, Aiden, and Evan. Alec was predeceased by his father Jack in 2021.
We will gather together to share potluck and stories of Alec’s adventures on June 22 (rain date June 23) at Ladies Beach, Nantucket. More information to follow via social media. We invite you to visit chapmanfuneral.com if you wish to share a message or memory.
Rest in peace, Alec. You will be forever missed.
