What is the best part about being a police officer on Nantucket?
The best part about being a police officer on Nantucket is the community: interacting with the community, helping the community, getting to know individuals within the community, and learning a lot about a community I grew up in.
What is it like to be a female in a traditionally male - dominated profession?
It is a learning curve to be a female in a male-dominated profession but since joining NPD, I have not felt as though we as females are treated differently, or viewed differently, within the department. Everyone is very supportive and helpful when it comes to everything and anything.
Are there ways in which the public interacts with you as a female officer differently than your male counterparts?
Somethings that I have noticed is that a lot of individuals will communicate with or through the male officer that is also on scene. I have also noticed that conversations can change when the gender of the officer changes. Many individuals may think they can “sweet talk” their way out of a situation when it comes to a female, but not a male. As a female Officer, I have also been approached multiple times, in which a male party has sexualized something, where they probably would have not done that to a male officer.
