The Whaler baseball team lost to the Sturgis East Storm on Friday by a score of 9-0. The loss dropped their record to 1-9 this year.
A pivotal moment in the game came in the third inning. Nantucket had the bases loaded and were down 6-0 at that point. A pair of runs could have changed the tide of the game, but the Whalers struck out looking three times and came out of the inning with nothing to show for it.
“That kid is a good pitcher and probably one of the two best pitchers we have seen,” head coach Jack Pearson said. “He seemed to get tougher as the situation got tougher but at the same time, you have to go down swinging.”
Pearson said his team has more winnable games on their schedule moving forward, but emphasized the importance of putting the ball in play and protecting the plate moving forward as two key areas they need to improve in if they want to win some of these games.

The Whalers are currently outside the projected MIAA Div. 4 tournament bracket. In the latest bracket released on May 13, Nantucket was seeded at #46. It could be an uphill battle for Nantucket to squeeze into the postseason, but due to a plethora of cancellations early in the season, the Whalers still have eight games left in the regular season.
The Whalers will be back in action on Tuesday, May 17, when they host the Sturgis West Navigators at 3:45 p.m.
