The Whaler girls lacrosse team beat the Falmouth Clippers 19-15 Saturday afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Bailey Lower scored five goals, including her 100th career goal. It took her just 22 games to reach that milestone.
Head coach Jami Lower was emotional talking about Bailey. For a moment we asked her to talk about Bailey from a Mom perspective rather than from a coaches perspective like she normally does.
“I can’t believe it. I almost started crying on the sideline,” Lower said. “She has the passion and the drive. What I love watching while she is playing is how clear her love for the game is. How can’t you love that.”
Cydney Mosscrop was excellent as usual for Nantucket as well, scoring five goals. She continues to have a tremendous season and now has 32 goals and 12 assists this season.
Seven different Whalers scored goals, including freshman Mayson Lower, who Jami Lower was also emotional speaking about as Mayson continues to become a bigger and bigger piece to the puzzle for Nantucket.
“She is getting the confidence she should have that she can play at this level,” Lower said. “From interceptions to assists to goals, she does it all. I’m so proud of her. She did it all today and showed it isn’t all just about her sister. It is about her too.”
Maddie Lombardi and Ava Mosscrop (two goals each) and Emerson Milne and Emerson Pekarcik (one goal each) rounded out the scoring.
The game began with a stretch of runs that eventually gave Nantucket a 6-3 lead midway through the first half.
But the Clippers went on to score six unanswered goals towards the end of the half to make it 9-6.
Nantucket hung in there and didn’t let it bother them. Bailey Lower scored two goals to end the half and got the offense going earlier in the second half.
The whalers settled down defensively. Lower said the defense was hurt by Senior midfielder Evelyn Fey’s absence, who is out with an injury.
Nantucket is now 8-2 this season and will host Dennis-Yarmouth on Tuesday, May 17, at 4 p.m.
