The Whaler boys lacrosse team knew it would be a tough challenge taking on the top-seeded Sandwich Blue Knights on Tuesday in their Round of 8 matchup and while they ultimately lost the game 8-2, they gave the Blue Knights everything they could handle.
Senior goalie George Boucher was incredible all game long. He finished with 19 saves.
“George played great and it is a great way for him to finish his career,” head coach Sam Aloisi said. “He is awesome. They dominated possession but even our defense was awesome too. Once we gave up those first two goals we switched to our zone and they didn’t have much of an answer for it other than transition goals and extra man goals.”
The Whalers trailed 2-0 after one quarter. Sophomore midfielder Jack Halik was robbed in the final seconds of the quarter when Sandwich goalie Shane Corcoran made a great stop on his knees to snag the bouncing shot.
It was 4-0 at halftime and 6-2 after three quarters. For much of the game, Nantucket remained within striking distance. Sandwich never had a chance to feel comfortable until the final minutes.
Cole Chambers and Makai Bodden scored Nantucket’s goals. Nantucket had several man-advantage opportunities in the second half, but were unable to capitalize on enough to catch up to the Blue Knights on the scoreboard. But nevertheless, the Whalers went toe-to-toe with a Blue Knight squad that appears to be on its way to a state title and Aloisi couldn’t be more proud of his group.
“I thought our defense played outstanding but that bad part is that their defense did also,” Aloisi said. He then went on to reflect on the season as a whole.
“We didn’t know where this team was going to go because they didn’t have a lot of experience playing lacrosse together or playing lacrosse in general,” Aloisi said. “But as the season progressed and we got to the midway point of the season they really started to turn it on and play well together on offense and defense. It was a great season. They exceeded my expectations.”
