Boys Lacrosse Stomps The Grapes On The Vineyard

The Whaler boys lacrosse team got off to an underwhelming start to begin the season. Despite being flooded with talent up and down the lineup, Nantucket lost three of their first four games of the season. Aside from their 15-1 win over St. John Paul II on April 14, the Whalers struggled to show consistency and continuity on offense, failing to score 10 goals in any of the other three games (16 goals in three losses).
But this past week Nantucket appears to have found their swagger and are playing excellent team lacrosse. After beating Barnstable 13-4 on Thursday, Nantucket went to Martha's Vineyard on Saturday for an island showdown and beat them 13-2. After scoring just 31 goals in the first four games of their season, the Whalers have 26 goals in their last two.
The continuing emergence and development of sophomore attacker Cole Chambers has played a significant role in that uptick of offense. Chambers had another excellent game on Saturday, scoring five goals and adding two assists. He now has nine goals and five assists in his last two games after scoring just six goals and four assists through the first four games of the season.
Aside from Chambers, the scoring on Saturday came from several different areas. Promising sophomore midfielder Jack Halik scored a pair. Senior attacker Cosmo Tedeschi scored two goals. Senior midfielders Justin Bloise and Caiden Shea each had a goal. Defenders Hunter Strojny and Justin Zadroga also tallied goals.
Goalie George Boucher wasn't too busy in net, but he did make five saves for Nantucket. Cole Evens continues to be very good in the faceoff dot for Nantucket.
The defense continues to be the strength of this team. Nantucket has yet to give up more than ten goals this season and on average, they are allowing just under six goals per game. If the offense can continue to develop as this season progresses, the Whalers figure to be a very difficult team to beat.
The Whalers are now 3-3 this season and will head on the road for a very difficult matchup against the Sandwich Blue Knights on Tuesday, May 3, at 3:30 p.m.
